An interesting read as always! I am intrigued by how the English have always spoken other languages and English is a magpie language with so much variation to explore. Yet still prejudices hang over us. My Granny had a strong Lincolnshire accent but as soon as she moved to London she dropped any kind of dialect. Back in the 40's it was all about speaking 'properly' - and yet her Lincolnshire English was just as proper as any other form.
Thanks Cathy! I don’t think my accent is noticeable until I say Somerset .. it always comes out as zummazet.. and I still say ‘where’s that to’ .. I love the regional nuances, down with RP
Love the hare, and learning French has been incredibly enlightening not least by helping me appreciate how we have twice as many words to choose from in English ❤️
One of the best things I learnt this week is that one of the French dialects used g at the start of a word where the other French dialect used w so the word ‘guarantee’ is the same word as ‘warranty’ in French but we just.. kept them both and changed the meanings a little to justify that. Madness
I can't tell you how much I love your blog, but especially when you paint!
Thanks jeanie, I needed to hear that. Don’t suppose it will make me paint more tho
